The Division of Student Life would like to congratulate Shane Hagen on being selected as the winner for the May 2015 Courage to Climb Award! Shane is a senior from Tullahoma, Tennessee, majoring in Civil and Environmental Engineering.
During his time at UT, Shane has served as a two-year officer of Alpha Epsilon Delta, UT’s pre-health honor society and is a member of Tau Beta Pi, an Engineering Honor society. He has aided Dr. Andrew Steen on research to characterize the activities of extremophilic microorganisms in marine sediments. He has worked on performing extracellular enzymes in deep marine sediments as well as a research assistant for other projects associated with the UT Graduate School of Medicine. Additionally, Shane has spent a significant amount of time volunteering with UT Medical Center, the Ronald McDonald House and Remote Area Medical, a program geared toward providing free health care to financially burdened families.
“I have never run into an undergraduate with as professional a demeanor as Shane. He comes to work, he works hard, he’s pleasant to be around and he gets the job done. I really think that he has the chance to make a real, positive change in the world,” his nominator said. After graduation Shane will be pursuing his medical degree at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center in Memphis, TN.
