Courage to Climb Award – March 2015

The Division of Student Life would like to congratulate Ryan Brown on being selected as the winner for the March 2015 Courage to Climb Award! Hailing from Murfreesboro, TN, Ryan is a senior Marketing and International Business major. During this time at UT Ryan has served as an Ignite Team Leader, was selected as an Emerging Leader and completed a global marketing internship in Norway.
If you had to describe Ryan’s involvement at UT over the last three and a half years the word “service” would be a common theme. Through the Alternative Break program, Ryan served on trips that focused on rebuilding and recovery in Alabama, hunger and homelessness issues in North Carolina and LGBT issues in Atlanta, where he was the leader. However, it was his Alternative Fall Break experience to Winston-Salem two years ago that inspired Ryan to return to campus and develop a campus organization called Food Recovery Network (FRN). The goal of FRN is to eliminate food waste at campus events and redirect the food to those who need it in the Knoxville community while also educating the campus on the issue of food waste. Ryan and the other students involved with FRN have built a strong relationship with Aramark on campus and various local organizations through their work. In the fall of 2014 FRN received a mini-grant provided by the Office of Sustainability and the Center for Leadership and Service to assist with continuing the FRN mission. This spring Ryan is attending the Food Waste and Hunger Summit to share the story of FRN with other college students and non-profit professionals and is using his work as the basis for his final project in the Leadership Knoxville Scholars program.
When asked about his time at UT Ryan said, “I have gained a lot of insight of what servant leadership really looks like.” Ryan, thank you for serving the UT community and congratulations on all you have accomplished. We wish you the best of luck in your future endeavors.
