Things You Didn’t Know You Could Do in the Student Union

There are several new and unexpected things you can expect to see and do in the newest phase of the Student Union. From new dining options to a new recreation room, you will have opportunities to interact with faculty, staff, and your fellow students to build a sense of community in Rocky Top’s new living room.

In the Union Station recreation area, you will have the chance to relax and bond with fellow Vols through billiards tables, cards games, table tennis, and TV with cable. Additionally, four Xbox stations and cornhole are coming soon to complete the space. Mark Rozanski, assistant director for the Student Union, says Union Station will allow students to host events like trivia nights, Xbox tournaments, and open mic nights.

While the new dining option, Steak ‘n Shake, isn’t a well-kept secret, you may not know that you may have the chance to get your hands on free mini milkshakes! Dean Shea Kidd-Houze has partnered up with Vol Dining for Milkshake Mondays. During select Mondays, students can meet up with Dean Shea on the first floor of the Union to get a free mini milkshake while supplies last. To know when Milkshake Mondays are happening, follow Dean Shea on Twitter at @HeyDrShea.

Trying to stick with your New Year’s resolutions and stay away from milkshakes? The Student Union and the Center for Health Education and Wellness may be able to help. The two departments are partnering up to create a walking path to follow. This path will account for approximate step counts, calories burned, and distance for those looking to stay on track.

Each floor has different setups of seating that are ideal for idea sharing, doing homework, hosting a meeting or conference, and getting together will other students, and faculty, and staff.

Coming soon to the Student Union is the Passport Center. This center will allow for you to renew, update, or get your first passport. And while you’re picking up your new passport, be sure to pick up your campus events tickets. Through the Central Ticket Office, you’ll have the ability to purchase KAT Bus Passes, Dollywood Season Passes, Tickets Unlimited event tickets, and more!

Whether looking for a place to grab a bite, take a break, or catch up on some steps, the Union offers a variety of ways for students, faculty, and staff to create a community.
