The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, is among the nominees for the Healthier Tennessee Community of the Year award, the highest honor given to a community participating in the Healthier Tennessee program.
Healthier Tennessee is an initiative of the Governor’s Foundation for Health and Wellness, which strives to enable and encourage Tennesseans to make healthier lifestyle choices. It is a statewide effort that brings together employers, health insurers, hospital systems, local governments, school systems, health care–focused foundations, and community organizations to create positive change in the lives of people throughout Tennessee.
Winners will be announced at the Healthier Tennessee Community Awards Gala held in Franklin on February 21, 2019.
UT has a number of initiatives that encourage the campus community to make healthier lifestyle choices. One of the university’s initiatives, Be Well, hits all the criteria of a Healthier Tennessee Campus.
The program, headed by the university’s Center for Health Education and Wellness, partners with Healthier Tennessee and seeks to improve the health and wellness of the campus community. It encourages individuals to move more and eat smarter, and its “Clear the Air” campaign is aimed at discontinuing tobacco use by banning it on campus. These initiatives all fall under the criteria for a Healthier Tennessee Campus.
Be Well provides health and wellness information and creates opportunities for participation in wellness activities as well as establishing support and networks for positive lifestyle change.
