You may have heard about the latest addition to campus: the Big Orange Pantry! Big Orange Pantry, located in Greve Hall, is the latest initiative within the Dean of Students to provide the UT community with the meals and supplies needed to succeed.
Around 32% of UT students identify as being food-insecure, meaning they lack consistent access to food for a variety of reasons, financial restrictions being a top reason. The Office of the Dean of Students saw this as an opportunity to build off of the Big Orange Meal Share program. The pantry, in partnership with Compassion Ministries and Second Harvest, will focus on providing students, faculty, and staff with emergency food assistance and resources.
What Does the Pantry Have?
All current UT students, faculty, and staff can use the pantry. There is a variety of supplies that the pantry will be offering, such as food, baby, cleaning, and hygiene products. The pantry will offer non-perishable items in November with limited perishable items. Full offerings will begin in spring 2021.
How Does Big Orange Pantry Work?
Due to COVID-19, you must schedule a time to pick up the supplies requested. If it is your first time using the Pantry, you will need to use the first-time user application. After that, you will use the Big Orange Pantry Online Ordering Form. You are able to order from the Pantry once per week.
Once your order is placed, a member of the Big Orange Pantry team will reach out with your pick-up time. November 2020 hours:
- Wednesday- 2–5 p.m.
- Friday- 2–5 p.m.
Other Meal Resources
Students also have access to Big Orange Meal Share, a short-term assistance program that allocates meals to students in need. Students who apply will receive meals based on the information provided in their application, up to 20 allocated meals. Dean of Students graduate assistant Shaun Holloway has worked with the Big Orange Meal Share program and notes how the program became more flexible to meet individual student needs.
