We encourage Volunteer families to discuss next year’s living arrangements with their students.
Room Selection for our returning Vols begins February 15! Each year, we welcome back more than 2,200 returning students to campus residence halls.
The Room Selection process provides several opportunities for students to sign up to live on campus, and every residence hall is included in the Room Selection process.
Below is a breakdown of key dates and times so you can help your student make the best decision for them and their college experience. Please note that all start and end times are Eastern Daylight Time (EDT).
Returning Student Room Selection
Room Selection for current students is an easy, two-step process:
Step 1: confirm a roommate in the University Housing Portal
Step 2: select a room using the dates below
February 15: Same Hall, Same Room Selection
Has your student found their perfect home-sweet-home and to stay where they are? Their selection process will start first! Same Hall, Same Room begins February 15 at 9 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m. on February 16.
February 17: Same Hall, Different Room
If your student likes their hall but wants to live in a new room, they can participate in the Same Hall, Different Room process! This process begins February 17 at 9 a.m. and ends at 9 a.m. on February 19.
February 22: Different Hall, Different Room
Does your student want to try out a totally new living space on campus? Different Hall, Different Room begins February 22 at 9 a.m. and continues until February 25 at 5 p.m. Participants in Different Hall, Different Room selection will be given a starting time during these date ranges based on entry year. Students will be notified of their specific selection window prior to February 22.
NEW! Incoming Student Room Selection Moves to a Lottery System
We are excited to announce that Room Selection will be moving to a lottery-based system for incoming students living on Rocky Top this fall to assist students experiencing financial or pandemic-related barriers. All residence hall options on campus will be available in each room selection time slot, providing students the opportunity to select from available rooms in each hall.
“The lottery-based model is intended to make the process of room selection more accessible to students who may not have been able to apply or confirm admission earlier because of pandemic related delays in records, testing, or financial access. It also allows us to spread the availability of residence hall space for all halls across the entire process, which is a need indicated in feedback about room selection in the past.”—Richard Swearingen, Associate Director for University Housing
Incoming students will receive more information about their Room Selection process in April.
