Make the Most of Your On-Campus Experience

Living on campus is a critical part of your Volunteer experience, and we are excited to meet you this fall! We know there are a lot of things to consider as you prepare to come to campus, and we want to help you along the way so that you are prepared and excited to join us on Rocky Top!

University Housing is wrapping up Room Selection this week, and over 4,800 incoming students have selected their room for the fall! As you begin to plan for move-in day, we have a few tips and reminders for you to consider.

Contact Your Roommate

Once you have selected your room, we recommend reaching out to your new roommate to get to know them! It’s important to coordinate what to bring and compare likes and dislikes. Having these conversations early and often during the summer will help set you up for a great experience in the fall semester!

All you need to do is log in to the University Housing Portal, and you can message your new roommate by selecting “Messages” under the three bars at the top left of your Portal menu. You just need to copy and paste the Roommate code from the Contract Summary page. Alternatively, you may look up your roommate’s email address using directory.utk.edu.

Change Your Room Assignment

After you select your room, you have the ability to change your room assignment using the modify your booking feature in the University Housing Portal. The modify my booking feature allows you to continue searching for available room space after you have made your first room choice. You can change your booking or your roommate group’s bookings as often as you would like throughout the summer, and available rooms will refresh in real-time as students move around. Learn more about Modify My Booking on University Housing’s YouTube channel.

Commuter exemption request reminder

If you plan to commute from home, don’t forget to fill out a Commuter Exemption Request in the University Housing Portal! If your permanent address is within 50 miles of campus, you are not required to live on campus like most first-year students. If you participated in Room Selection and have changed your mind, you can still fill out the Commuter Exemption Request form to be released from your housing contract.

Move-In

Move-in dates will be Sunday, August 8 through Tuesday, August 17. Move-in is by appointment to help ensure a smooth experience for you and your family. You will be assigned a date/time to log in to the University Housing Portal to schedule your move-in appointment, and access to create move-in appointments will begin in late June.

Students registered for participation in certain early-start programs (Sorority Recruitment, Ignite, etc.) will have specific appointments held on the dates of their programs to ensure the availability of move-in opportunities for participants who must arrive on those dates.

Since you will be moving in during a specific timeframe, it will be important to pack strategically. It is a good idea to pack only essential items needed for the fall semester, including cleaning supplies to keep your living space as clean as possible.

If you are planning to ship items to your residence hall, make sure the delivery date is no more than a week prior to your move-in appointment.

Get to know your RA

Resident Assistants, or RAs, are amazing resources for you beginning the first day you arrive for move-in at UT. They will help make sure that you are feeling connected to campus, know how to find your classes, help you meet other students, and plan great events for you to attend. RAs are older students that have been in the same place that you are in now, and they have all the insider knowledge to help make your freshman year amazing. They can’t wait to meet you!

Get Excited!

We can’t wait to see you this fall and hope you’re just as excited to get your UT experience started! Be sure to follow University Housing on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook for all your housing needs for this fall.
