Department Mission Statement: The mission of the Jones Center for Leadership and Service (JCLS) is to educate and engage all students to lead and serve in the global community. As a part of the JCLS, the University of Tennessee VOLbreaks Alternative Break program engages students in short-term immersion experiences that address social issues in local, national, and international communities. Alongside our mutually beneficial community partnerships, students develop as socially responsible leaders through reflection, education, direct service, and action.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

VOLbreaks – the Alternative Breaks Program

  • Co-advise the recruitment, selection, training, and development of all Alternative Break Student Coordinators and Trip Leaders including coordinating and attending weekly trainings, events, and service opportunities
  • Co-advise the recruitment, selection, training and development of the Alternative Break Trip participants including coordinating and attending trainings, events, and service opportunities as needed
  • Oversee reorientation efforts, driven by Alternative Break Student Coordinators
  • Oversee all resource development and implementation for the Alternative Breaks Program, including a break trip manual that is updated annually
  • Oversee all trip planning logistics including securing transportation, service sites and housing for each domestic trip
  • Advise and manage all Alternative Break fundraising events
  • Oversee Alternative Break marketing and public relations to the campus and community and initiate contacts to develop partnerships
  • Coordinate all assessment and post-trip record keeping associated with the Alternative Breaks

Alternative Break Local Trips

  • Directly oversee the development of AB Local experiences
  • Directly oversee the recruitment and selection of AB Local participants
  • Directly oversee the coordination of service sites, housing, budget, and all trip logistics
  • Directly oversee assessment and post-trip record keeping with AB Locals

International Service Immersion Experiences

  • Co-advise the recruitment, selection, training, and development of all international service immersion experience participants
  • Co-advise the course curriculum development for international experiences including readings, service site education, the cultural history of location, assignments, etc.
  • Oversee reorientation efforts for international experience participants
  • Oversee all resource development and implementation for international experiences
  • Directly oversee all trip planning logistics for at least one international experience a year including working with campus partners on service sites, transportation, and housing logistics
  • Directly oversee budget and proper documentation for at least one international experience a year
  • Advise and manage the scholarship process for international experiences
  • Oversee international experience marketing and public relations to the campus and community and initiate contacts to develop partnerships
  • Coordinate all assessment and post-trip record keeping associated with international experiences

Additional Opportunities

  • Serve on the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service Committee
  • Assist with the Leadership Studies Minor which will promote college student leadership education by preparing undergraduate students for and about leadership on campus and in our community, with a goal to prepare students to serve confidently, collaboratively, and ethically in formal and informal leadership roles in campus, local, national, and global contexts.
  • Attend an Alternative Break experience. The AB trips provide an affordable option for students who are interested in giving back to the national community through meaningful and collaborative community service. Each trip is centered on a theme that addresses a specific social issue unique to the community being served.
  • Serve as an Ignite Facilitator. Ignite is a unique opportunity for freshmen to learn about opportunities for involvement and life outside the classroom while meeting other new students and developing their leadership skills.
  • Serve as an On-Site Coordinator for UT’s campus LeaderShape session.
    o Serve on the StrengthsQuest Facilitation Team
    o Coordinate reservations for rooms, facilities, and vehicles for designated departmental programs.
  • Coordinate catering, as needed, for departmental programs.
  • Assist in developing and managing budgets for specific programs.
  • Assist with office publications, social media, and website development.
  • Assist with program and student assessment and evaluation.
  • Explore new programming initiatives in the areas of leadership & service.
  • Work collaboratively with other campus entities to provide educational opportunities for students.
  • Assist with all CLS programs, courses, and student recruitment
  • Present programs for student groups and community agencies as needed
  • Assist with the university, divisional and community events as a representative of CLS
  • Represent CLS at Admissions, Orientation, and recruitment events
  • Assist with staffing and supervision of space and students in the Center for Student Involvement Resource Room
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Responsibilities and Tasks:

  • Enrolled in graduate school at the University of Tennessee. Preference is given to students pursuing a career in higher education/student affairs.
  • A commitment to the educational development of undergraduate students.
  • Strong background in student involvement, diversity & inclusion, leadership development, and/or service initiatives at the undergraduate level.
  • Evidence of strong communication, collaboration, and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity and a desire to work in a team environment.
  • A demonstrated commitment to social justice, community service, leadership development, service learning, assessment, and student needs/programming.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor at all times, including appropriate attire, maintaining office hours, and professional conduct with staff and students.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the core values of the Jones Center for Leadership & Service including civility, honesty, community, integrity, compassion, inclusion, diligence, justice, learning, service, respect, support, and involvement.

Salary/Benefits:

  • A stipend of $1,325/month, tuition waiver (in or out of state), and student health insurance
  • Professional experience by working directly on many projects, co-teaching, and advising student groups.

Term:

  • This is a 12-month at-will appointment, starting July 5, 2021. The Graduate Teaching Assistant Position is for 20 hours per week and will be required to keep regular office hours. In addition, this position requires flexibility due to night and weekend programs.
