Hispanic Heritage Month Highlight: SHPE

This month our campus is celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month! It runs from September 15 – October 15, but we are always celebrating the Latinx community across our campus. There are many different Hispanic groups in our community, and we are excited to highlight a few in this series.

Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) mission is to change lives by empowering the Hispanic community to realize its fullest potential and to impact the world through STEM awareness, access, support, and development. “As a chapter, our goal is to provide all the resources and support necessary to see our members excel in their academic, professional, and personal endeavors,” chapter president Adiany Cartagena-Febus writes.

E-Board at award ceremony“Being a member of our organization means being part of our familia.” You’ll get to meet company representatives one on one, as well as gaining additional help with homework or tutoring from upperclassmen within the society. They offer weekend excursions to the movies or a night out to dinner just to relax. “Whatever you need, we have your back!” Some of the major events SHPE hosts are Study with SHPE sessions, Familia Night socials, and general body meetings where the focus is on academic and professional development workshops.

Society President Adiany Cartagena-Febus explains, “As college students, we all have our highs and lows, and SHPE has been there with me through all of it. When I fall, they are there to help me back up, and when I’m succeeding, they’re cheering me on as I reach for my goals.”

If you’re interested in joining SHPE, just check them out on VoLink! There’s an option on there to join the organization, and through the platform, they can add you to their notification list. Additionally, join them at their general meetings!

Follow them on Instagram @utkshpe for future or past events!

Come hang out with a community of people who love to support Hispanics in STEM, you don’t have to be Latinx and/or Hispanic to join!
