Student Union’s Student Employment Program Recognized with NASPA Excellence Award

The Student Union’s student employment program has been recognized by NASPA for its outstanding contribution to student development and success. Receiving a Silver Excellence Award in the Fraternity and Sorority Life, Leadership, Student Activities, Student Union, and related category, the student employment program is designed to foster holistic growth in students by equipping them with essential career skills while fulfilling key campus functions.

Informed by contemporary research on workplace readiness, the program emphasizes the development of verbal reasoning, critical thinking, problem-solving, and communication skills. It encourages students to think independently, exercise sound judgment, and collaborate effectively with individuals from a variety of majors, programs, and life experiences. The program offers many roles such as event management and customer service, marketing, game room operations and facilities operations, and it employs over 110 students each semester. This broad spectrum of workforce opportunities significantly enhances the student experience on campus.

In 2015, the first of three major program overhauls was initiated. The initial iteration was grounded in the Council for the Advancement of Standards learning and development outcomes, the original ACUI core competencies, and the Division of Student Life learning outcomes. In 2017, the program began integrating competencies outlined by the National Association of Colleges and Employers, which have since become a cornerstone of student employee learning. The student employment program has consistently updated its evaluation rubrics, most recently in 2023, to strengthen the connection between student employment and real-world applications.

Students regularly report increased confidence, enhanced job performance, and a greater sense of connection to the campus community. Surveys show that over 90% of student employees feel valued and engaged. Evaluations, including knowledge assessments and 360-degree reviews, provide a structured path for continuous improvement. Alumni frequently credit their SEP experience as instrumental in securing internships and employment opportunities.

A unique aspect of the SEP is its impact on students’ sense of belonging. Approximately 85% of student employees utilize “The Chamber,” a designated hangout and study space that fosters connections and inclusion. Mid-semester check-ins provide valuable feedback, especially from first-year employees.

The SEP aligns with the Division of Student Life Strategic Plan by supporting workplace readiness and holistic development. It fosters leadership skills through shared decision-making processes and prepares students to collaborate effectively within teams of varying perspectives and backgrounds. The program also emphasizes effective resource management, ensuring the Student Union maximizes its capacity to serve the university community.

Collaborations with on-campus departments like the Center for Career Development & Academic Exploration and the Center for Health Education and Wellness have enhanced professional development sessions covering financial literacy and interview workshops. Continuous improvement is ensured through student feedback, comprehensive evaluations, and institutional support for staff training.

The success of SEP has been recognized at ACUI Region III conferences and replicated by other institutions. The program’s framework has inspired several campus departments to adopt similar practices.

The Student Union’s SEP exemplifies excellence in fostering student learning and success. By integrating strategic priorities with core functions of a college union, SEP enhances community engagement, promotes a sense of belonging, supports personal and professional growth, and responsibly manages resources. This comprehensive approach empowers students to thrive in their roles while contributing meaningfully to the campus community.
