Judith Anderson Herbert, known as Judi, exemplifies philanthropy, leadership, and a steadfast commitment to education at the University of Tennessee and beyond. A proud alumna of UT Knoxville, Judi graduated in 1963 with a degree in English and joined Sigma Kappa Sorority, where her passion for writing and helping others flourished. Her dedication to writing has significantly shaped her contributions to the university, most notably through the establishment of the Judith Anderson Herbert Writing Center. This center supports student writers in developing effective communication skills, leaving a lasting impact on students’ academic success. Judi also serves on the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Advisory Board and has been an active member of the UTFI Alliance of Women Philanthropists. Together with her husband, Jim, she established the Herbert College of Agriculture Strategic Endowment, which is one of the largest gifts in UT history. In her hometown of Lansing, Michigan, they have made substantial contributions to local healthcare, culminating in the creation of the Herbert-Herman Cancer Center at Sparrow Health System. Their record-breaking gift to the Sparrow Foundation in 2022 established the Genomics Endowment for cancer diagnosis and treatment, further reflecting Judi’s dedication to improving lives through advancements in healthcare. Judi’s commitment to Sigma Kappa spans over 30 years, during which she has taken on numerous volunteer roles, including advisory board chair. Her involvement extends to supporting the Alpha Delta Chapter at UT, where she provides invaluable guidance and financial assistance. Judi’s unwavering support for education and healthcare has transformed programs, benefiting countless students and patients. Her remarkable achievements as a philanthropist and advocate for education make her an exemplary candidate for the Alumni Hall of Fame. Judi’s vision and tireless efforts continue to inspire future generations, ensuring that her legacy of generosity and commitment to excellence thrives for years to come.
