Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Preference given to candidates accepted or enrolled in the College Student Personnel (CSP) master’s or doctoral program at The University of Tennessee, Knoxville, although candidates enrolled in other master’s and doctoral programs may also apply and be considered
  • Working knowledge of basic computer hardware and software, including but not limited to Adobe Acrobat, Microsoft Office (including Outlook), Windows, Mac OS, iOS, and Canva
  • Superior collaboration, organizational, and communication skills, both oral and written
  • Ability to take initiative and work independently on assigned projects
    Demonstrate a commitment to the Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) mission of compassionate care, leadership & service, mattering & belonging for all students
  • Social media and basic graphic design experience are beneficial but not required

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Outreach & Initiatives

  • Collaborate with the DOS professional staff on DOS initiatives, including but not limited to Bias Education, Big Orange Meal Share, Kicks and Convos, Lunch Hours, Rocky Top Roundtable, RockyTopics, Smokey’s Sofa, Student Honorary Coach, UT to West TN trips, and many others
  • Create and oversee social media initiatives, update Office of the Dean of website, and maintain an effective online presence
  • Develop, recruit, train, and supervise the Rocky Top Roundtable Advisory Council to present and educate the campus community on initiatives, issues pertinent to the work of the Office of the DOS and creating involvement opportunities for the ambassadors to engage with the office initiatives and programs
  • Review applications for Big Orange Meal Share; allocate meals for students in need; work with UT Dining to apply meals to students’ accounts; develop and oversee a marketing plan for donations and overall awareness
  • Coordinate and schedule online requests for presentations by campus departments and student organizations related to the function, programs, and services of the Dean of Students office
  • Assist in providing bias education, outreach, and referral to the Coordinator of Bias Education; serve as a member of the Bias Education and Referral Team; work with the Coordinator of Bias Education and Student Life Marketing team to maintain social media presence and timely campaigns

Student Government Association/ First-Year Leadership Council

  • Responsible for assisting in the leadership development of the first-year leadership council within SGA
  • Collaborate with the Co-advisors (Assistant Director of Outreach and Initiatives & Dean of Students) to advise SGA
  • Advise the FYLC executive team consisting of the SGA Vice President and 2 student advisors
  • Supervise and assist in creation of assessment tools for FYLC
    Social Media
  • Assist with print and social media-based publications distributed by DOS
  • Create graphics and forms for websites/department publications
  • Assist with administrative and information review, including but not limited to drafting official correspondence, researching policy, and benchmarking best practices
  • Collaborate with the Graduate Assistant for Family Engagement to maintain social media presence.
  • Upload and archive data on the web server

General Duties

  • Serve as a member of the DOS staff and meet regularly with the Assistant Director of Outreach and Initiatives and other appropriate DOS staff
  • Greet and answer questions from students and visitors of DOS
  • Respond appropriately to student and parent concerns
  • Meet with students as needed
  • Attend meetings, events, and programs supported by DOS, including serving on university and divisional committees
  • All other duties as assigned

Salary/Benefits:

  • Tuition waiver (in and/or out of state), monthly stipend of $1,325, and student health insurance is provided
  • Professional experience working directly on many projects and initiatives

Term:

  • This is a 12-month at-will appointment for fall 2021
  • This position requires twenty (20) hours a week, during which the Graduate Assistant will work in the Office of the Dean of Students (Student Union).
  • The Graduate Assistant may be able to perform some of their duties off-site, but a visible presence in the office is generally required. The Graduate Assistant will generally be able to determine their own work schedule (between 8:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday) as long as their work meets the twenty-hour requirement.
