Department Mission Statement: The mission of the Pride Center is to provide academic and social support for the LGBTQ+ community at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville (UT). We strive to be a space for all members of the UT community to engage with and explore issues relating to gender and sexuality. Our mission is accomplished through our educational programming focusing on gender identity, gender expression, and sexual orientation; our contributions to and maintenance of a campus LGBTQ+ community; and advocating for equitable access for LGBTQ+ students, faculty, and staff on campus.

Job Requirements/Qualifications:

  • Entry into the UTK CSP Program (preferred but not required)
  • Possess at least basic knowledge of the LGBTQIA+ community with a mind eager to learn more about the community.
  • Committed to working twenty hours a week, with some nights and weekends required
  • Ability to work both independently and closely with the Coordinator depending on the nature of the assignment;
  • A self-starter that is ready to think about creative ways to educate the campus community about diversity, equity, and justice and empower our students to be their most authentic selves

Responsibilities and Tasks:

Administrative and Assessment

  • Gain knowledge of the Pride Center administrative unit, outreach, and services for students and campus partnerships
  • Benchmark and research best practices related to LGBTQIA+ student outreach and retention
  • Evaluation and assessment of Pride Center initiatives, programs, and services; recommendations for process and program improvement
  • Communicate with different facets of the LGBTQIA+ community to determine the needs of the community and the climate for LGBTQIA+ individuals on campus
  • Work with student leaders, staff, faculty, and administration to address the needs of the community
  • Publication and presentation development, design, and dissemination
  • Manage, design, and update content on the center website, newsletters, and social media accounts as necessary
  • Answer the phone and greet visitors to the Pride Center as well as assisting with other general office support and management

Supervision, Student Development and Program Planning

  • Oversight, along with the Coordinator, of the Pride Center undergraduate work-study student assistants, including planning professional development and other educational opportunities
  • Oversight of the Peer Mentoring Program, including applicant interviews, participant matching, trainings, and other developmental and social activities

Educational Outreach and Facilitation

  • Facilitate Safe Zone at UT sessions
  • Drafting, sending, and responding to administrative communications related to Safe Zone at UT, including participant registration information, certification notices, scheduling reminders, etc.
  • Assist with program curriculum development, assessment practices, and advertising and marketing
  • Assist with training and support for the Safe Zone at UT program’s volunteer facilitation team
  • Maintain and update the Safe Zone at UT participant database
  • Create and offer programs and other ways to educate the UT community about LGBTQIA+ related current events occurring locally, statewide, nationally, internationally, and transnationally
  • Serve as a liaison to various LGBTQIA+ committees on campus as needed and attending committees/meetings as needed in place of the Coordinator as a representative of the Center

Salary/Benefits:

  • $1,325/month stipend

Term:

  • This position runs from July 2021 – May 2023, with summer 2022 flexible for other internships, temporary assistantships here or on campus, etc.
