Students with Private Insurance

Students with private insurance will be responsible for paying all charges related to a visit at the UT Student Health Center.

Unless paid for during the week of service, all charges incurred are transferred to student bursar accounts on the Monday of the week following a visit; payment will need to be made on your MyUTK account. 

To pay using a debit, credit, or HSA/PSA card, present card for payment in the administration office on the second floor by 5 p.m. on Friday during the week you received care or call the administrative office to may a payment over the phone at 865-974-3135, option 6. 


Tenncare, Medicare, or Medicaid

Students with Tenncare, Medicare, or Medicaid will be responsible for all charges related to a visit at the UT Student Health Center.

UT Student Health Center providers are not registered TennCare, Medicaid, or Medicare providers.

UT Student Health Center providers do not file claims for TennCare, Medicare, or Medicaid.

Charges for the following services are not reimbursable by your plan: 

  • Labs 
  • X-rays 
  • Prescription medications
  • Injectable medications and immunizations
  • Durable medical goods (e.g. crutches, splints, boots, etc.) 
  • Referrals to off-site medical consultants 

Uploading Your Heath Insurance Card

Although the Student Health Center does not directly bill a student’s private health insurance for professional services, lab work, immunizations, injections, x-rays, physical therapy, or durable medical goods (i.e. crutches, splints, etc.), it is still necessary for us to have your up-to-date private health insurance information for certain labs or diagnostic testing that may have to be performed off-site, such as a local hospital or diagnostic center, or when referring a student to a sub-specialty provider in the community. 

To upload an insurance card: 

  1. Scan front and back of card and save to your computer files. 
  2. Log into the Patient Portal with our UTK netID and password. 
  3. Click on the “Upload” button.
  4. Click on “Copy of Health Insurance Card”. 
  5. Upload insurance card from your saved file.

Students with No Insurance 

Students with no health insurance will be responsible for all charges related to a visit at the UT Student Health Center.

Additional Information

The UT Student Health Center: 

  • Does not charge students to see providers 
  • Does charge for select services such as, but not limited to, lab tests, x-rays, injections, physical therapy, durable medical goods 
  • Does not file insurance claims for students who have individual private insurance 
  • Transfers all outstanding charges to student bursar accounts on the Monday following a visit to the SHC 
  • Can provide students with an itemized statement to file their own claims 
  • Cannot guarantee reimbursement by individual private insurance

Note: The UT sponsored student health insurance pays 100% for nearly all charges related to a visit at the UT Student Health Center (there are a few exceptions).
