Student Health Center Eligibility

Distance education and online students do not pay the Student Programs and Services Fee. Therefore, these students are not eligible to use the services of the Student Health Center.

Distant education students who have a paid UT appointment as a graduate assistant or associate and are insured through the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) may pay a: 

• $75.00 Summer Access Fee to be eligible for services at the Student Health Center during the summer
• $75.00 Summer Access Fee to be eligible for services at the Student Counseling Center during the summer

Note: Fees are center-specific. To be eligible to access services through both the Student Health Center and the Student Counseling Center, both fees must be paid.

Students graduating in May who are insured through the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) may be able to pay Summer Access Fees to continue accessing the Student Health Center and Student Counseling Center services through the summer term. More information about summer access fees will be provided to the student near the end of the academic year.

Students graduating in May who are not insured through the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) may be seen through the date of commencement. 

Students graduating in December who are not insured through the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) may be seen through the Sunday of the week prior to the first day of classes in the spring semester. 

Students enrolled through the UT Health Science Center (UTHSC) who are taking classes on the UT Knoxville campus and have paid the Student Programs and Services Fee are eligible for services. 

Special Notes: 

• All charges incurred are transferred to the UTHSC student bursar account. 
• The UT Student Health Center does not file claims for UTHSC students. 
• UTHSC students can request an itemized receipt to file their own claims.

Medical and physician assistant students on rotation in Knoxville are only eligible during the dates of their rotation if they have paid the Student Programs and Services Fee.

New undergraduate, graduate, and transfer students may access the UT Student Health Center prior to the start of classes to receive required immunizations or testing for immunization compliance. These students: 

• Must provide proof of enrollment for the upcoming semester. 
• Are only able to access services for immunizations and testing required for immunization compliance. 
• Must pay for all charges incurred for lab work, immunizations, and/or tuberculosis testing. 

Note: If the student must see a SHC provider due to an immunization encounter (e.g. abnormal test result or an immunization reaction), an access fee will be assessed. 

International students who 

• Are enrolled in the university-sponsored SHIP and 
• Were enrolled in classes during the spring semester but are not enrolled in classes during the summer semester may be able to pay a summer access fee to be eligible for services.

Faculty and staff are expected to pay in full on the day of service; faculty and staff may only be seen for:

• Allergy injections 
• Travel medicine advice 
• Immunizations required for employees 

Visiting Scholars:

• May enroll in the university sponsored SHIP by visiting www.studenthealthprograms.com.
• Must call The Hildreth Agency with any questions at 865-691-4652.
• Do not pay the Student Programs and Services Fee and are not eligible to see medical or mental health care providers at the on-campus UT Student Health Center 
• Must seek medical and mental health care from off campus providers 
• Do not require a referral from the UT Student Health Center 
• May have prescriptions filled at the UT Student Health Center Pharmacy 

• Dependents of students are not eligible for UT Student Health Center services.
