rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Register for Vols ACT Training<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is a Bystander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A\u202f<strong>bystander<\/strong>\u202fis a person who&nbsp;observes&nbsp;a behavior that is unacceptable and could be potentially harmful to another person\u2019s health or well-being. Examples include alcohol abuse, hazing, violence, sexual assault, relationship abuse, and discrimination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a bystander, we may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Think it is none of our business&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hope that someone else will deal with it&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Miss an opportunity to change the community we live in for the better<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What is an Active Bystander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>An\u202f<strong>active bystander<\/strong>\u202fis a person who takes&nbsp;the steps&nbsp;that can make a difference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a bystander, we may:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Positively&nbsp;impact&nbsp;the individuals we are concerned about&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Become a role model for others to have the confidence to speak up&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Create a community that values taking care of one another<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How Can I Use Vols ACT to Be an Active Bystander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are three key steps to being an active bystander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion\"><div data-accordion=\"true\" class=\"utk-wds-accordion-wrapper\" data-color-scheme=\"light\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div>1. <strong>Acknowledge the situation<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Trust the voice within yourself that senses when something is wrong. Pay attention to your surroundings. If you feel like a&nbsp;situation&nbsp;you witness is off, wrong, or harmful, listen to that feeling.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div>2. <strong>Consider your options<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Consider your options for intervening. Think about what you&nbsp;could&nbsp;do. What factors do you need to consider? Some include:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Time of day&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Location&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Safety&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Situational power<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div>3. Take action<\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<p>After acknowledging that you should intervene and&nbsp;considering&nbsp;your options and safety concerns,&nbsp;it\u2019s&nbsp;time to&nbsp;take action! You can act using the 3 D\u2019s: Direct, Distract, Delegate.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-28f84493 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What are the 3 D\u2019s and How Can I Use Them<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The 3&nbsp;D\u2019s&nbsp;are strategies that you can use to intervene in a situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion\"><div data-accordion=\"true\" class=\"utk-wds-accordion-wrapper\" data-color-scheme=\"light\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>Direct<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Step in and address the situation directly.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example: \u201cWhat you are doing is wrong.\u201d \u201cHey,&nbsp;that\u2019s&nbsp;not cool. You&nbsp;shouldn\u2019t&nbsp;be doing that.\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>Distract<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Provide a distraction that shifts the focus of the situation. This can include doing something to separate the victim from the situation or causing a physical distraction, like spilling a drink and asking for help cleaning it up.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example: \u201cCan you show me where the bathroom is?\u201d&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-utk-wds-accordion-panel\"><h2 class=\"utk-wds-accordion__heading\" data-accordion-heading=\"true\"><div><strong>Delegate<\/strong><\/div><\/h2><section data-accordion-section=\"true\"><div class=\"utk-wds-accordion__panel-body\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Find others who can help you to intervene in the situation. There is power in numbers. This can include asking a friend to intervene with you or getting help from security or staff.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Example: \u201cHey, I\u2019m Smokey, will you help me?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div><\/section><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Safety is Important<strong>&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When deciding how to act, it is important to keep yourself safe. It may not be safe to directly intervene sometimes, so distracting or delegating may be the better\u00a0option. In other situations, you might decide to use all 3\u00a0Ds.
