The word \u201cstress\u201d&nbsp;refers to&nbsp;the feeling of being&nbsp;overwhelmed&nbsp;and struggling to cope with the pressures placed upon us.&nbsp;For college students, common stressors&nbsp;include&nbsp;obstacles to achieving goals,&nbsp;a change in the environment, and major life transitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some stressors can be positive and motivate you with an extra burst of adrenaline needed to finish a final paper or perform well in sports. However, too much stress can be negative and&nbsp;may go unnoticed until a physical or emotional side effect presents itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is important for students to recognize the physical and psychological warning signs of stress in order to&nbsp;learn to manage and maintain stress at relatively healthy levels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Warning Signs of Stress Overload<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-65f56a5c wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-container-core-column-is-layout-8ff61abe wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Changes in sleep patterns,&nbsp;taking longer to fall asleep,&nbsp;waking up tired and not well rested&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Changes in eating patterns&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More frequent headaches than usual&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Shorter temper than usual<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Recurring colds and minor illness&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-container-core-column-is-layout-8ff61abe wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\" style=\"flex-basis:66.66%\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Frequent muscle ache or tightness&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>More disorganized than usual&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased difficulty in task completion&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Greater sense of persistent time pressure&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Increased generalized frustration and anger&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator has-alpha-channel-opacity\" \/>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading has-text-align-center\">Eight Ways to Stress-Proof Your Day<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Turn a negative experience in a positive one.<\/strong> Say you leave your headphones in the car when you go to the gym\u2014interpret the return trip to the car not as&nbsp;an irritant&nbsp;but as a chance to warm up before you even climb on the treadmill.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Give to someone else.<\/strong> Doing something nice for others can make you happier and calmer.&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Set goals.<\/strong> Jot down attainable\u202fgoals\u202ffor the week and aim to achieve one every day. This is&nbsp;a great way&nbsp;to track&nbsp;what\u2019s&nbsp;going right.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Build social support.<\/strong> Brain scans show that the same circuitry&nbsp;fires&nbsp;when we feel emotional pain as when we feel physical pain &#8211; but that circuitry is slower to react in those with greater social support in their daily lives.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>One good thing.<\/strong> \u202fNotice at least one good thing\u202fyou experience each day. Then make it real by telling someone about it or writing it down. The event can be as small as getting out of bed on time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Meditate.<\/strong> Meditation can&nbsp;alter&nbsp;our brains, increasing gray matter in regions associated with emotional regulation and dampening activity in the fear-responsive amygdala.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Get sleep.<\/strong> Sleep deprivation is one of the greatest angst inducers &#8211; it causes stress hormones to soar and sparks other imbalances.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Exercise regularly.<\/strong> Exercise works as a mild or good stressor: 150\u202fminutes of moderate intensity exercise a week (twenty-five minutes, six days a week) is linked with both reduced stress levels and increased growth of new brain cells.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:45px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns alignwide has-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-002ffff5 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\" style=\"border-top-color:var(--wp--preset--color--orange)\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column has-light-background-color has-background is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Student Counseling Center Services\u202f&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Student Counseling Center provides a variety of group sessions that can be helpful for stress reduction, such as groups that focus on stress management and anxiety and building resiliency.
