Campus Climate

The University of Tennessee is committed to fostering an environment where all members of the campus community can learn and thrive.

The campus climate should affirm the dignity of all and encourage the exchange of ideas through discourse in every aspect of campus life. The Office of the Dean of Students addresses concerns that impact the campus climate and provides outreach, support, and education to those who may have been affected by a campus climate concern.

How to Report a Campus Climate Concern

Student–Related Incidents

A student who has experienced or witnessed a campus climate concern or incident should:

  • Call 911 if they feel threatened or in immediate danger
  • Contact a person you trust with whom you can speak honestly and openly, i.e., hall director, professor, academic advisor, coach, etc.

Faculty and Staff–Related Incidents

A faculty or staff member who has experienced or witnessed a campus climate concern or incident should:

  • Call 911 if the faculty or staff member feels threatened or in immediate danger
  • Initiate a complaint through the Office of Investigation & Resolution, (865) 974-0717 or the academic dean of the appropriate college if the threat is not immediate. The individual may also consult their immediate supervisor or another person in authority within the department. Complaints lodged in any of these offices will be referred for further investigation, and as appropriate to the University of Tennessee Police Department.
  • We also encourage you to submit a Campus Climate Reporting Form if the threat is not immediate.

Visitor-Related Incidents

A visitor to the University of Tennessee campus who has experienced or witnessed a campus climate concern should:

  • Call 911 if they feel threatened or in immediate danger

Confidentiality

Reasonable efforts will be made to protect the confidentiality of the individuals targeted and to maintain the confidentiality requested by the reporting party. The outcome of any reported incident will take into account the confidentiality of the involved parties.
