As enrollment and demand continue to grow at UT, the Division of Student Life must be operating at its best, offering programs at scale for the student population, evaluating support services, and creating additional opportunities for students to learn, lead, and serve. Student Life is committed to operational excellence, and it achieves that through intentional evaluation and insightful reflection.
The division conducts a structured review process that promotes effectiveness and accountability across all departments and the division as a whole. Examples of this intentional review process include a NASPA division review conducted in 2021, a NASPA service unit review conducted in 2025, and ongoing five-year departmental review cycles.
Each review begins with a comprehensive self-study that examines current processes, practices, programs, and services. This internal reflection establishes a framework grounded in professional standards and serves as the foundation for external evaluation.
Following the self-study, carefully selected higher education experts conduct an on-site visit. These reviewers bring extensive experience and provide actionable recommendations to ensure Student Life remains responsive to evolving needs and best practices. The department review process developed by Student Life Effectiveness has been recognized by CAS presidents and other respected assessment professionals as a model of excellence.
The departmental review process served as a catalyst for University Housing’s strategic growth. “The departmental review was instrumental in shaping our ability to develop a comprehensive strategic plan and effectively tell our story through assessment,” said Anthony White, executive director for University Housing. “Through this process, we are better equipped to articulate our contributions to the success of our students and demonstrate the transformative impact of our efforts on the campus community.” White added that the review provided critical insights, highlighting key strengths, areas for improvement, and opportunities for growth. He emphasized that this process has allowed the team to align goals with institutional priorities in ways that are impactful and forward-thinking. The review also underscored the importance of data-driven decision-making, empowering staff to use assessment as a tool to showcase the value and outcomes of their work.
University Housing’s experience reflects the broader purpose of these reviews across Student Life, turning reflection into actionable direction for every department. As Vice Chancellor of Student Life Susannah Marshman explains, “The department review process turns reflection into direction—helping an office intentionally align what it does today with the vision it wants to achieve tomorrow.” This intentional review process is more than an accountability measure; it is a driver of continuous improvement across Student Life.
By combining self-assessment with expert external evaluation, the division ensures that its programs and services remain aligned with divisional priorities and are responsive to the evolving needs of students. The recognition of this framework as a model of excellence underscores its credibility within the higher education assessment community. Most importantly, the process empowers departments to leverage data, tell their story, and demonstrate their transformative impact on the Volunteer student experience.
