Navigating Appointments with Health Care Providers

Doctor speaks to patient.

Going to health care appointments alone can seem intimidating and stressful at times. Being prepared prior to showing up, however, can help in reducing appointment anxiety. The Division of Student Life has provided some steps students can take prior to their appointments at the Student Health Center on campus to make sure that students are preparing and sharing the best information with their providers during their appointments.

After setting up your appointment, it’s important to check your email and patient portal to know what’s required for your appointment and fill out any required forms in advance. Write down any questions for the provider and bring a list of any current medications, their doses, and how often you take them. This includes prescriptions, over-the-counter medication, supplements, or vitamins.

When talking with the provider during the appointment, it’s crucial to be honest and thorough while explaining any health history and any occurring symptoms. If, at any point, you don’t understand what your health care provider is explaining to you, ask questions until you do. For any terms that are new or unfamiliar, ask what those terms mean. If your provider is recommending testing, lab work, or other diagnostic tools, ask what information those tools will provide and how it will impact your care moving forward. Check on their cost before you agree, as well. While most provider visits at the Student Health Center are free of charge to you, there will be additional fees for lab tests and x-rays. This also applies to students who need prescription medication as well.

Lastly, after an appointment, it’s important to follow the instructions left by your health care provider. If at any point, you don’t understand something, students are encouraged to call back and ask for any needed clarification. For students who underwent any testing, the Patient Portal will have information such as patient education materials and test results. If symptoms worsen or don’t seem to be improving, make sure to follow up with your provider, and always call your provider before you discontinue any prescription medications or other treatments.

Handling appointments at the Student Health Center doesn’t have to be stressful. We hope that with accurate information and proper preparation, the Student Health Center can provide a healthy, comfortable, and supportive environment for all students.
