This resource provides information for UT students transitioning to off-campus housing in Knoxville. It covers the key steps involved in preparing for move-in, settling in, accessing campus resources from off-campus, and moving out.

Before You Move

Once you’ve signed a lease, work through this list before moving day:

• Confirm your move-in date and key pick-up time with your landlord.
• Set up utilities before you arrive, if necessary.
• At least two weeks before you move-in, forward your mail through USPS at usps.com/move.
• Update your address with the UT Registrar through MyUTK.
• Notify your bank, subscriptions, and any other accounts of your new address.
• Purchase renters’ insurance before moving in, if you are not using the property’s renters’ insurance.

Move-In Day

• Document the apartment’s condition at move-in through photos and notes.
• Ask for a move-in inspection sheet.
• Sign and return any required move-in inspection forms to your landlord.
• Take pictures of your common spaces as well as your bedroom to document the condition and any preexisting damages.
• Report any damages within 24 hours of accepting your keys.

Staying Connected

Living off campus doesn’t mean missing out. Here are a few ways to stay plugged in:

• Register your phone number for UT ALERT at safety.utk.edu/ut-alert
• Use social media to stay connected. Follow your academic college or department and student organizations you’re interested in for event updates.
• Use your VolCard for free Knoxville Area Transit (KAT) bus rides, library access, recreational facilities, and campus events.
• Connect with the Off-Campus Student Living office for resources, community events, and off-campus student support.
• Get connected to campus through the Center for Student Engagement.

Moving Out

• Follow your landlord’s instructions for removing nails, thumbtacks, or Command Strips from the wall.
• Clean room by room (check off as you go).
• Leave nothing behind, as you could be charged for abandoned items.
• Check your lease for any additional requirements like carpet cleaning or setting the HVAC unit to a certain temperature.
• Check the time you need to be out.
