The Office of Student Conduct & Community Standard relies on community members volunteering their time and knowledge to assist us in completing our mission. There are several ways to support the betterment of the Volunteer family.
“The effectiveness of the student conduct process rests partially upon the participation of all members of the University community.”
– Student Code of Conduct
University Advisors
All students involved in the Student Conduct Process have the fundamental right to an advisor if they wish. Advisors are available to both respondents and complainants. Respondents are students who have allegedly violated our code. Complainants are students who report or begin an investigation within our department. Student Conduct & Community Standards (SCCS) uses a list of trusted and trained community members to help each student utilize an advisor if they wish.
With a variety of student needs and University Advisors’ availability, we regularly look to update our list. If you wish to volunteer your time working directly with students by providing your experience and wisdom, please email studentconduct@utk.edu.
Student Conduct Board
Apply to be a part of our Student Conduct Board to listen to hearings and determine the best course of action for the student and community members involved. Students, Staff, and Faculty members are encouraged to apply! All Student Conduct Boards are composed of students, faculty, and staff. Serving as a member of the Student Conduct Board is a rewarding way to actively uphold the mission and values of the university while ensuring a fair and equitable process for students and student organizations. Student Conduct Board members gain meaningful experience and advanced leadership skills.
Student Conduct Board members are charged with (1) determining whether a student or student organization is responsible for a violation of the Standards of Conduct and (2) if the student or student organization is found responsible, determining the appropriate sanction for the violation.
As a Student Conduct Board member, you will have the opportunity to:
- Encourage conduct that positively impacts students and the university
- Preserve institutional integrity and hold peers accountable
- Promote positive relationships for the university and surrounding community
- Protect the rights and privileges of all members of the University community
- Help to maintain a safe and secure learning environment
SCCS recruits and trains Student Conduct Board members on a recurring basis. SCCS is not currently accepting applications for SCB members. For detailed information related to member qualifications, responsibilities, and benefits of being a member, please emailĀ studentconduct@utk.edu.
Practicum Students
Practicum students are typically graduate students wishing to gain more experience in higher education. This is an unpaid internship designed to give you more opportunities to learn and grow within the field alongside our team. If you are interested in this opportunity, please email studentconduct@utk.edu.
Graduate Assistantships
Students interested in graduate assistantships are required to be graduate students who do not have another graduate assistantship. While this is an opportunity to learn, this is a job with higher expectations of performance. Job expectations will include 20 hours a week, working directly with students through educational conferences, maintaining excellent documentation, and more independence of duties. An organized, hard-working, strengths-focused, team-oriented individual with excellent verbal and written communication skills would be a great candidate. SCCS Graduate Assistantships are currently filled for the 2024-2025 academic year. If you are interested in learning about open Graduate Assistantships across campus, visit the Graduate School’s Graduate Assistantship webpage for more details.
