Hazing can affect people in many different ways, including anger, confusion, betrayal, fear, resentment, embarrassment, humiliation, hopelessness, helplessness, anxiety, or depression. What is Hazing?
The University of Tennessee is committed to a safe learning environment that allows for students’ personal growth and development in the most positive manner possible. As such, the university does not permit hazing and is committed to fostering environments where students and student organizations alike can thrive. Hazing is prohibited by the Student Code of Conduct, as required by Tennessee State Law (Tennessee Code Annotated Title 49, Chapter 7, Section 123 (T.C.A. § 49-7-123).
The University defines hazing as:
Any intentional or reckless act, on or off University-controlled property, by one (1) student, acting alone or with others, which is directed against any other student, which endangers the mental or physical health, safety, or welfare of that student, or which induces or coerces a student to endanger their mental or physical health, safety, or welfare. Hazing does not include customary athletic events or similar contests or competitions and is limited to those actions taken and situations created in connection with initiation into or affiliation with any organization regardless of the student’s willingness to participate. Hazing Prevention
The Hazing Prevention Team is a collective group of students, staff, and campus administrators who are passionate about raising awareness regarding hazing and working with offices and departments across the entire campus to help prevent the dangers of hazing.
