Registered student organizations operate independently of the University of Tennessee, with some receiving guidance and support from university departments. The university encourages student organizations to promote civil and social awareness, but it does not endorse their activities or viewpoints. The mission of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), the University of Tennessee, Knoxville Chapter is to inform students of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities while advancing the status of the Knoxville community, and developing intelligent and proactive youth leadership. Some of NAACP’s signature events include Skate Night, NAACP Image Awards, and co-hosting the Annual Black Issues Conference.
