Student Life Provides Innovative Solutions for Campus Housing

Housing is not only a basic need but also something in scarce supply nationwide, and students are experiencing this challenge in unique ways. University Housing and other departments are working to alleviate the stresses students experience throughout the housing process. Whether students live on campus in residence
halls or off campus, Student Life support is
available for them.

A New Program Area

This year, the division is launching a new program area, Off-Campus Student Life. Headed by program director Thomas Boleyn, efforts will focus on helping commuter students feel connected to campus and supporting their unique Volunteer experience.

An off-campus housing website is available to help students match with other students looking for roommates and locate properties that have listings for space available to students. Students can utilize this website to search for off-campus housing, compare rates, and connect with resources. An off-campus housing fair and educational programming have also been offered to provide helpful information for students and their families.

Creatively Increasing Capacity

UT currently has its highest amount of housing inventory, with more than 8,700 on-campus beds, not including Greek-letter organization housing. UT is committed to practicing responsible and creative stewardship of university resources to maximize the student experience and is working to increase capacity. UT has also contracted with Lakemoor Station Apartments to provide accommodations for approximately 188 students. These apartments have an on-site hall director and resident assistants to provide social and educational programming. Lakemoor Station houses UT students only and offers shuttles to campus seven days a week.

A public-private partnership approved by the State Building Commission in December 2022 will also build more residence halls that will add 2,500 beds to the university’s housing capacity.

A Smooth Move-In Experience

In order to facilitate the safest experience possible during the COVID-19 pandemic, University Housing implemented an appointment process for move-in for new students living in campus residence halls. The process received so much positive feedback that it has continued, with many appreciative parents and families sharing how smooth and pleasant the logistic aspects are. As parents and families manage what can be a difficult emotional process of helping their student navigate the transition to college, eliminating any logistical or operational stress can really improve the move-in experience. This redesigned process means families can focus on being together and getting their student settled rather than experiencing undue stress or confusion.

In order to maintain UT’s commitment to delivering on the Volunteer experience for students, a smaller first-year class was admitted in fall 2023 due to increasing retention and persistence rates. However, overall enrollment continues to grow. UT is a university on the rise and we are changing and adapting to support students.
