Make the Most of Your On-Campus Experience

Are you living on campus? Getting ready to move in this fall? We want to help so you feel prepared to come to campus and excited to join us on Rocky Top!

Contact Your Roommate

Students in a dorm roomOnce you have selected your room, we recommend reaching out to your new roommate to get to know them! It’s important to coordinate what to bring and compare likes and dislikes. Having these conversations early and often during the summer will help set you up for a great experience in the fall semester.

All you need to do is log in to the University Housing Portal, click your 2024-2025 application tab, and navigate to the Housing Agreement & Booking Summary page. On that page you can view your roommate’s name and click “Send Message” to communicate via the University Housing Portal. Alternatively, you may look up your roommate’s email address using

Change Your Room Assignment

After you select your room, you have the ability to change your room assignment using the modify your booking feature in the University Housing Portal. The modify my booking feature allows you to continue searching for available room space after you have made your first room choice. You can change your booking or your roommate group’s bookings as often as you would like throughout the summer, and available rooms will refresh in real-time as students move around. Learn more about Modify My Booking on University Housing’s YouTube channel.

Commuter exemption request reminder

If you plan to commute from home, don’t forget to fill out a Commuter Exemption Request in the University Housing Portal! If your permanent address is within 50 miles of campus, you are not required to live on campus like most first-year students. If you participated in Room Selection and have changed your mind, you can still fill out the Commuter Exemption Request to be released from your housing agreement.

Students carrying personal itemsMove-in dates will be Sunday, August 11 through Sunday, August 18. Move-in is by appointment to help ensure a smooth experience for you and your family. First-year students will select a move-in appointment in the University Housing Portal immediately after selecting a room. If you modify your room assignment to a different building, you will need to select a new move-in appointment.

Students registered for participation in certain early-start programs (sorority recruitment, Ignite, etc.) will have specific appointments held for the dates of their programs.

Since you will be moving in during a specific timeframe, it will be important to pack strategically. It is a good idea to pack only essential items needed for the fall semester.

If you are planning to ship items to your residence hall, make sure the delivery date is no more than a week before your move-in appointment.

Get to know your RA

Two students smile at each other as they fist bumpResident assistants, or RAs, are amazing resources for you beginning the first day you arrive for move-in at UT. They will help make sure that you are feeling connected to campus, know how to find your classes, help you meet other students, and plan great events for you to attend. RAs are older students that have been in the same place that you are in now, and they have all the insider knowledge to help make your freshman year amazing. They can’t wait to meet you!

Get Excited!

We can’t wait to see you this fall and hope you’re just as excited to get your UT experience started! Be sure to follow University Housing on Instagram and Facebook for all your housing needs for this fall.
