New Student Life leadership team members

Student Life will welcome several new staff members to the leadership team over the summer. New leadership can be an exciting time for an office or department as it offers a chance for new visions and focus areas.

Leadership and Engagement

Susannah MarshmanSusannah Marshman, assistant vice chancellor for leadership and engagement, will begin on July 1. Marshman joins UT from Coastal Carolina University where she served as the assistant vice president for student engagement since July 2020. The assistant vice chancellor for leadership and engagement is a new position in Student Life and will focus on leading all aspects of student leadership, service, campus engagement, and programming. Marshman will engage, challenge, and support our students through intentional programs and services.

Marshman earned her Doctor of Philosophy degree in higher education from Florida State University in 2017, her master’s degree in curriculum and instruction from Virginia Tech in 2008, and her bachelor’s degree from Virginia Tech in 2007.

Office of the Dean of Students

Byron HughesByron Hughes, assistant vice chancellor for Student Life and dean of students, will begin on July 1. He is joining UT from Virginia Tech, where he served as the dean of students since October 2018. Hughes will focus on three foundations: student advocacy, support, and mattering and belonging. He will assume an advocacy role for students while supporting them through educational, social, cultural, and personal development opportunities.

Hughes earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree in higher education from Virginia Tech in 2017, his master’s degree in student affairs in higher education from Ball State University in 2002, and his bachelor’s degree from Salisbury University in 2000.

Office of Multicultural Student Life

Anthony Prewitt, director of the Office of Multicultural Student Life, joined UT after serving as the co-interim director for Student Life and Multicultural Affairs, assistant director for Multicultural Affairs, and advisor for the National Pan-Hellenic Council Fraternities and Sororities at the University of Tennessee at Martin (UTM).

Anthony has over 16 years of experience in higher education, having worked in Residence Life, Student Conduct, Fraternity & Sorority Life, Student Programming, Student Recruitment, and Student Life and Multicultural Affairs. He is completing his Ed.D. in P-20 and Community Leadership at Murray State University, a master’s degree from Murray State University, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Tennessee at Martin.

Student Counseling Center

Nicole Saylor, director of the Student Counseling Center, joined UT on June 13. She served as a professor of social and behavioral sciences and the psychology program director at Johnson University. She also serves as the internship coordinator and the counseling lab coordinator for the program. Nicole has over 10 years of experience as a licensed clinical psychologist with experience in hospital systems and community mental health, including psychiatric medication services.

She received her bachelor’s degree in Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, both her master’s degree in Clinical Psychology and her doctoral degree in Psychology from Wheaton College.

University Housing

Anthony White, executive director of University Housing, will join us on Rocky Top on July 1. He served as the director of Housing & Residence Life at Radford University. Anthony has worked in housing and residence life programs at various institutions for the past 20 years.

Anthony has a bachelor’s degree in sociology and a master’s degree in College Student Development, both from Appalachian State University. He also earned his doctorate in Education from Texas State University.
