Professional Interestsheadshot of jess king

My broad professional interests include Appalachian and/or first- generation college students. I believe both groups have unique experiences that they bring to therapy, and I enjoy collaborating with these students to process those experiences. I also have a passion for working with students who are experiencing grief/bereavement, and folks who may be experiencing suicidal thoughts.

Theoretical Orientation

The foundation of my theoretical style is Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). This means that I gravitate towards helping clients be more flexible when facing challenges and live by their values. I strive to create a strong therapeutic relationship between me and my clients through being my authentic self while creating a warm, safe space for clients to also be their authentic selves. I also use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, and strengths-based approaches, or any combination of these to help clients reach their treatment goals.

Personal Interests

Outside of work, I love to read fantasy books and watch any kind of sci-fi movie or TV. I also like to cook and try new restaurants with my fiancé. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention my calico cat, Freyja, and my obsession with good coffee!
