Intramural Sports
The RecSports Intramural Sports program provides all members of the university community, regardless of age, gender, handicap, skill level, or experience, opportunities to participate in recreational events in a fun and safe environment.
Annually, the program offers a wide range of team, dual, and individual activities aimed at maximizing student participation. Activities include flag football, sand volleyball, tennis, basketball, volleyball, soccer, dodgeball, racquetball, kickball, inner tube water polo, ultimate frisbee, and much more. Most intramural activities are free to UT students who have paid their Sstudent Programs and Services Fee, and all faculty and staff who have paid membership fees to RecSports.
Registration
To ensure the most effective and efficient registration process, the following procedures have been established.
- Entries for all intramural activities are accepted during assigned registration periods on a first come, first served basis, so teams and individuals are encouraged to enter promptly.
- Registration dates as well as other useful information will be available approximately one month prior to the start of each semester.
For most activities, registration occurs online at IMLeagues website beginning at 9 a.m. on the first day of the registration period and concluding at midnight on the final day of the registration period. Should these times or the registration period dates change, it will be clearly noted on the website.
Registration Instructions
- Refer to the intramurals events calendar for registration period dates and other important information.
- Go to IMLeagues and click “Create Account.”
- For designated sports, the team captain or a representative must complete the Captain’s Quiz to guarantee the team’s spot in the league.
- Your team is now registered, and your spot is guaranteed. If at any point you need to drop your team, please contact our office by phone at 865-974-2382 or by email [email protected].
Creating an Account:
- Enter your information and use your school email address (@vols.utk.edu).

Waitlist Information
If your team is unable to find a spot in a particular sport, you can place your team on the waitlist. For many of our sports, additional league spots will be made available for waitlisted teams once registration closes. The Intramural office will contact waitlisted teams about these additional spots the day following the close of registration. In addition, spots may become available once the season begins due to teams dropping from the league or forfeiting a game. Waitlist teams not contacted by week three should attempt to join another team.
General IM Leagues Information
You can join a sport one of three ways:
- Team captains can create a team.
- Team captains can invite members to their team by clicking the “Invite Members” link on the team page. Any invited members must accept the invitation to join your team.
- If the invited member is already registered on IMLeagues, search for their name and invite them. If they haven’t yet registered on IMLeagues, scroll down to the “Invite by Email Address” box, and input their email address.
- Join a team: Use the “Create/Join Team” button at the top right of every page. Accept a request from the captain to join his or her team. Find the team and captain name on division/league page and request to join. Go to the captain’s playercard page, view his or her team, and request to join.
Free Agent Registration
Don’t have a team? No worries! For team sports, we provide individuals an opportunity to add themselves to a free agent list. Before you can add yourself to the free agent list, you must create an IMLeagues account. If you have already created an account, skip the “Account Registration” section.

Frequently Asked Questions
Here is a list of frequently asked questions regarding intramural sports at UT. Though there are numerous questions and answers posted, intramural participants are encouraged to read the Intramural Participant Handbook for all policies and procedures.
Information on the activities offered during each semester can be found on the intramural website.
All UT undergraduate and graduate students who are currently enrolled and have paid the Students Programs and Services Fee are eligible for intramural activities. Faculty and staff members with a RecSports membership are eligible for intramural activities. Those with a “Plus One” membership are not eligible to participate in intramural sports.
All participants must present a current UT student ID or RecSports Membership card before each intramural contest. If the membership card does not have a picture, you will be required to show a picture ID with your membership card to play. No exceptions.
A forfeit occurs when a team does not have the minimum number of players present and legally signed in at game time. A forfeit fine will be assessed to the team captain’s student account for all forfeits. A default forfeit occurs when a team captain contacts the Intramural Office in advance to notify the staff that his or her team will be unable to attend their contest. Teams must notify the Intramural Office by 3 p.m. the day of the contest. The game is recorded as a loss, but no forfeit fine is assessed.
The Intramural Sports Program does not typically form teams for individuals but rather helps potential participants locate others who would like to form a team or already has a team that just needs a few extra players. We call individuals looking for teams free agents. For team sports, we provide individuals an opportunity to add themselves to a free agent list at imleagues.com so that team captains are able to contact them to add free agents to their roster.
All ejected players must schedule a meeting with the intramural graduate assistant before he or she is permitted to participate in future intramural contests. Ejected players are suspended indefinitely from any intramural contests until he or she attends and has been reinstated.
During the regular season, players are permitted to play on multiple teams in all eligible divisions. During postseason play, players may only select one team from all eligible divisions.
A female participant may play on a men’s league team; however, she forfeits the right to play on a women’s league team.
If the wrong score is listed on the website, the team manager should immediately contact the Intramural Office at [email protected].
