Student Health Center Frequently Asked Questions
Who can utilize the services at the UT Student Health Center?
Students actively enrolled in on-campus courses who have paid all or part of the UT Programs & Services Fee.
University of Tennessee Health Science Center students who have paid all or part of the UT Programs & Services Fee.
Staff & faculty may only be seen in the allergy/immunization clinic for:
- Allergy shots
- Compulsory vaccines and testing ordered by their UT department
- Travel medicine
The following are not permitted to utilize the services of the UT Student Health Center:
- Students enrolled
- In a distance education program
- In fully online classes
- In a co-op program
- Through UT Space Institute attending classes on the UT Knoxville campus
- Visiting scholars
- Employees for general medical care

Can I walk into the clinic and be seen by a medical provider immediately?
No. Students may see medical providers by appointment only.

Does the UT Student Health Center charge for services?
Students who are actively enrolled in classes are not charged for appointments. However, there are charges for additional services such as x-rays, lab work, physical therapy, immunizations, durable and disposable medical goods, and other medical needs.
Does the UT Student Health Center file insurance?
The UT SHC files claims for students enrolled in the university-sponsored Student Health Insurance Plan.
The UT SHC does not file claims for students with private insurance. Students who have private insurance may request an itemized statement to file their own claim with their insurance company.
How can students pay for services at the UT Student Health Center?
Unless paid for during the week of service, all charges incurred are transferred to student bursar accounts on the Monday of the week following a visit; payment will need to be made on your MyUTK account.
Will parents have access to student medical information?
No. Student health information is private and protected.
Each time students visit the UT Student Health Center, they may choose whether or not to allow parents access to their information.
Can parents request itemized receipts for students?
No. Students may request a copy of itemized receipts on the day of service before leaving the building or call the administrative office to have a copy mailed to parents.
Are there walk-in clinics near campus?
Yes. Many of the area’s Walgreens, CVS, and Kroger stores have walk-in clinics.
A Student Health provider referred me to the UT Medical Center Emergency Room. Why am I being billed?
The UT Medical Center is a separate entity from the university and bills students for all services. To receive after-hours student agreement pricing, Student Health Center-eligible students should present their UT student ID and personal health insurance card or information.
The UT Student Health Center staff cannot help with billing questions for charges related to a visit at the UT Medical Center.

Does the university cover any expenses incurred by students at the UT Medical Center?
No. Beyond receiving a discount at UT Medical Center’s emergency room, students will be responsible for charges associated with a visit. Students should present their UT student ID and insurance information to receive discounted care.
